Vaccination
SPCA supports vaccination of all farmed animals to avoid serious disease.
Vaccinations are a key preventative measure to minimise the incidence and transmission of highly contagious and often fatal diseases. Farmed animals can be exposed to disease through their environment, new animals entering the system, and wild animals. Increased stress in intensive systems can impact animals’ immune systems which consequently increases their risk of becoming ill. Animal health is important for welfare and productivity which improves the economic and environmental sustainability of farming. Vaccination also reduces the need for using antibiotics, which is the primary cause of antibiotic resistance.
SPCA advocates that every farm has a vaccination programme contained within their herd or flock health plan, developed with their veterinarian.
Vaccination use should be responsible; correct usage should be established with a qualified farm veterinarian. Vaccinations should not be used in lieu of good management of housing, nutrition, pest management.
