Maverick: from fearful and trembling to bouncy and wriggly
With his tail tucked tightly between his legs, his tiny body trembling, and his eyes wide in fear, we could see that this little puppy had already been through too much.
A rough playtime accident at home with a larger dog left tiny Maverick horribly injured. His face was ripped open, and he suffered a deep bite wound on his shoulder. He needed emergency surgery to stop further suffering and avoid a lifetime of consequences.
Maverick’s family couldn’t afford the emergency vet bills, and it wasn’t safe for Maverick to return home to their bigger dog. After a compassionate but realistic conversation with our staff, a decision was made.
Although it was with heavy hearts, Maverick’s family made the brave decision to do what was in his best interests and surrendered him to SPCA, knowing it was the only way he would receive the urgent care he needed. Because of their courage, the vets were able to act fast and give Maverick the best chance at recovery. His gaping wounds were stitched, and his little body stabilised. He’s been left with what’s affectionately known as a ‘snaggle lip’.
Maverick spent a month at the Centre while he recovered. While he was there, he stole the hearts of our team - with many staff and volunteers stopping by regularly for cuddles and playtime with him!
Part of his rehabilitation included being taken out for walks in the puppy pram so that he could experience fresh air, sunshine, new sights, and smells in a safe way. While he was healing and still quite young, he wasn't ready to go on full walks yet, so this is how the team provided enrichment for him.
Now, Maverick’s quirky smile shows more than just the scars of surgery – it is a badge of courage. His little ‘snaggle lip’ will forever tell of the kindness of special people who made his rescue and healing possible.
