A new independent report by Infometrics has revealed that RNZSPCA created an estimated $989.2 million in social, economic, and community value in the 2023/24 year. This means that for every dollar invested, SPCA delivered more than $10 in return.

The Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis captures the wide-reaching benefits of SPCA’s work, from improving mental and physical health and reducing violence to supporting biodiversity and building stronger communities.

SPCA’s efforts in animal adoption alone generated over $350 million in value by improving the health and wellbeing of individuals and families. Desexing over 33,000 animals not only prevented suffering and abandonment but also protected native wildlife and reduced aggressive behaviour in dogs. Its work in preventing cruelty—responding to more than 25,000 cases of abuse and neglect—contributed another $328 million by helping to reduce violence in homes.

The charity’s Op Shops saved kiwis’ money, while diverting nearly 3,000 tonnes of goods from landfill. Meanwhile, SPCA’s Pet Pantries provided essential food support to pet owners in the community in-need, and its volunteer programmes helped thousands gain valuable skills and pathways to employment.

SPCA’s education programmes, now reaching nearly half of New Zealand’s primary schools, are fostering empathy and reducing bullying and cruelty among children—laying the foundation for a kinder future.

The report estimates the total cost of SPCA’s work, including volunteer contributions, at $94 million.

Beyond the numbers, SPCA’s work includes emergency rescues during natural disasters, and national leadership in animal welfare reform. Its visible presence in communities helps deter cruelty and promote compassion.

“For the first time, this report proves what we’ve always known in our hearts - SPCA’s work reaches far beyond animals. It touches people’s health and happiness, strengthens communities, protects our environment, and creates nearly a billion dollars of social good every year. We are immensely proud of the difference we are making together, and deeply grateful to every supporter whose kindness makes this extraordinary impact possible,” says SPCA CEO, Todd Westwood.
