The queue of cars lining up to visit SPCA’s Canine Health Event in Silverstream showed the level of demand for this much-anticipated community event.

Held at St Patricks College, the SPCA team was there to provide free health checks, vaccinations, microchipping, and flea and worm treatments for dogs in the region.

The response from local dog owners was incredible.

“The turn out was just amazing,” says Archie Pararasasingham, Wellington SPCA Centre Manager. “We were able to treat 123 dogs in total over the course of the day, and the dog owners were really appreciative of our work.”

“We know times are tough at the moment with the cost of living, so we’re happy to be able to help where we can.”

As well as providing health checks for the dogs, SPCA was also able to organise community desexing vouchers, and gave away pet food, toys, leads, harnesses, and other accessories to those who needed them.

“We want to say a special thank you to our vets and other team members and volunteers who gave their time and their expertise to give back to community,” says Archie.

These events are not only about numbers - it’s about keeping dogs healthy, safe, and ensuring they stay with their families.

Diseases like parvovirus can be devastating, especially for puppies. Parvo spreads easily, can be deadly, and is completely preventable with vaccination. That’s why events like this are so important, as we can protect dogs before they’re exposed to serious illness, and give owners the tools they need to care for their pets.

“By vaccinating, microchipping, and providing essentials, we’re helping dogs live longer, healthier lives and keeping the wider community safe too,” says Wellington SPCA Veterinary Practice Manager, Mauricio Rios Jaramillo.

“If we can prevent just one dog from getting seriously sick, it’s worth every moment of effort. That’s why we do this.”

As a charity, SPCA relies heavily on donations and volunteers to continue its important work.
