SPCA needs help to build a fit-for-purpose Animal Welfare Centre in Wiri

Located just 10 minutes from the current Māngere site, Wiri offers the space and infrastructure needed to build a fit-for-purpose Centre.

The current site cannot meet the growing demand for animal care, and its limitations slow down recovery for vulnerable animals. The new Wiri Centre will transform how SPCA rehabilitates and rehomes animals, with modern spaces designed to reduce stress and speed up recovery, helping thousands more animals every year.

“This isn’t just a new building - it’s a leap forward in how we protect, rehabilitate, and rehome animals,” says General Manager: Marketing & Engagement, Julia van de Coolwijk.

“Wiri will allow us to do more, reach further, and serve animals and people better than ever before."

Scheduled for completion in November 2026, the Wiri Centre will be a transformative step forward in how SPCA cares for animals and connects with communities across the region. Fundraising is currently underway for this new Centre, and donations can be made online.

The new facility will feature faster rehabilitation facilities through purpose-built spaces that reduce stress and improve recovery. It will expand capacity, enabling SPCA to care for up to 2,000 additional animals annually. The Centre will also be able to help a wider range of animals, including aquatic animals for the first time, and a Community Hub for education, outreach, and events.

The Wiri Centre will also serve as a “superhub”, supporting SPCA Centres in Hamilton, Thames, Whangarei, and Hobsonville with veterinary and surgical services - reducing reliance on external providers and improving care across the North Island, while remaining deeply committed to frontline services like desexing, rescue, and rehabilitation.

The new Centre represents a major investment, with partial funding already secured through the sale of SPCA’s Māngere site. However, additional support is urgently needed to bring this vision to life.

SPCA is calling on animal lovers, donors, and community members to help build a future where vulnerable animals receive the care they deserve in a safe, modern environment.

“We need help to complete the Centre and welcome support in many forms, including donations, volunteering, and gifts in Wills,” says Julia.
