A match made in heaven: Zion and Luca’s story
Adopted over a year apart, these two cats became inseparable in their loving forever home.
Adopters Taegan and Mitch reached out to SPCA to share an update on how their furry family members are settling in together. Read on to hear from them about Zion and Luca, who quickly became a bonded pair.
Finding a fur-friend for Zion
I wanted to share a little love letter to the two cats we’ve adopted through SPCA, and to say thank you for changing our lives in the most beautiful ways.
Back in May 2023, my partner Mitch adopted Zion. He was just three months old;, tiny paws, bright-eyed, and full of that teeny kitten courage that makes them step into the world like everything is new and full of wonder.
Mitch was off work with a broken arm at the time, stuck at home and feeling a bit flat, and this little fluffball arrived like a burst of light. Zion took four days to settle in and about four minutes to completely win Mitch over.
He grew into the playful, cuddly companion Mitch didn’t know he needed. He’s our wee spark of joy, spoiled on more than just his birthdays and Christmases, devoted to his nightly lap-nap routine, and famous for zooming around with his favourite toys and befriending every cat in the neighbourhood.
On 11 December 2024, Mitch and I bought our first home together. Zion had grown into such a social boy that we knew he would miss the little friends he’d made in his old neighbourhood. So the very next day, we came straight back to SPCA and met our sweet girl, Luca.
She was six months old at the time, just over a year younger than Zion, with a soft, cautious little presence that made us instantly want to protect her. She hid at first, curled under the bed or tucked into corners, unsure whether she could trust us.
Settling Luca in to her forever home
Normally we’d take our time introducing two cats, but something about Luca’s tentative curiosity made it clear she needed reassurance more than structure. So we opened the door and let Zion wander in. Luca crept out from under the bed, absolutely fascinated by him. He didn’t notice her at first, tracking her scent with that determined little nose. When he finally spotted her, he was so gentle it made both of us melt. He gave her space, let her choose the pace, and she followed him with this brave, hopeful curiosity.
Within an hour, they were roaming the whole house together as if they’d been waiting their whole lives to meet.
The transformation
And now, almost a year later, Luca has blossomed. She went from flinching at our hands to nudging us for pats, chatting away to us, and curling up so close at night that she practically fuses into us. She absolutely adores her big brother, and he adores her right back.
Their little life together is honestly the sweetest thing we’ve ever witnessed.
They have a cat tower in every room of the house (yes, every room), and they cycle through them like tiny royalty inspecting their kingdom.
They love their treat puzzles, their crinkly tunnel, and all the hidey-holes they’ve claimed as their own, but nothing compares to their noisy ball toys. Those are their shared obsession. Well… almost. The only thing they love more than their noisy balls is each other.
We’ve caught them booping noses, sharing sunspots, playing their little chase games, curled up side by side, and exchanging the occasional soft little kiss that completely melts us.
Zion and Luca - also known as Mr Z and Lady Lu / Chipmunk and Pumpkin / Bubba and Princess, have brought more warmth, joy, and gentle magic into our home than we ever imagined. They are the sweetest addition to our lives, and the sweetest addition to each other’s.
Thank you, truly, for bringing these two little souls into our world.
